Fungal nail infections are a common problem that can affect any nail especially those on the feet.

They are caused by different types of fungi such as candida – the fungus that causes thrush, but most often they are caused by the dermatophyte fungi which is also the cause of athletes foot.

Fungal nail infections occur when the spores of the fungi make their way between your toenail and the skin underneath (the nail-bed) and feed off the skin or keratin in the nail). This can cause the nail to start to separate from the nail bed which makes your nails appear opaque/white in the corners. Also, some fungal infections can cause your nails to become discoloured, thick and difficult to cut.

For many years, Podiatrists have been able to identify and advise on treatment for fungal nail conditions. Unfortunately, until now we haven’t been able to reliably confirm the diagnosis through testing.

Previously we’ve depended on patients to take a nail clipping to their GP who would send this to the lab to be tested and the results can take up to 6 weeks. The results would sometimes come back as negative even though we knew there was a fungal infection present possibly due to the nail sample being not taken correctly or being kept aside for a few days before testing.

Our Fungal Nail Infection testing provides a quick, accurate (over 97%) and very effective in-clinic test result for the presence of dermatophytes that are the most common cause of fungal nail Infections.

The test takes no more than five minutes and involves no pain or discomfort. All that is required is a small nail clipping that is taken correctly and processed straight away in our clinic.

The results are sent to you on the same day and once a diagnosis is made, we will discuss treatment options with you. This can include conservative management, nail fenestration or laser treatment (coming soon).
